Careers Education at Trent View College
Trent View views the careers curriculum as a means to break down barriers and the concept of ‘careers’ which look different for each student.
The SEND Code of Practice states that ‘with high aspirations, and the right support, the vast majority of children and young people can go on to achieve successful long-term outcomes in adult life’. Furthermore, it adds that education providers and their partners should work together to help children and young people to realise their ambitions in relation to:
- Higher education and/or employment – including exploring different employment options
- Independent living – enabling people to have choice and control over their lives and the support they receive, their accommodation and living arrangements, including supported living
- Participating in society – including having friends and supportive relationships, and participating in, and contributing to, the local community
- Being as healthy as possible in adult life
Careers education is threaded through the curriculum offer with coverage taking place within Preparation for Adulthood, Vocational options, Core Skills and where appropriate in the Tutorial sessions. Careers education is embedded as part of the curriculum offer and students, where appropriate, will work towards NOCN qualifications in Independent Living and/or Skills for Employability and also support students to undertake enhanced vocational qualifications.

Trent View holds an annual EmployABLE festival and in 2025 this was alongside the North Lincolnshire Parent Carer Forum event: Empowering SEND. This event is an opportunity for students to showcase their vocational skills and to consider their options and pathways when they leave Trent View College. Our next event will be on Thursday 14th May 2026.

Trent View has an onsite café that is open to the public from 10am – 2pm, Trent Brew, where students can gain work experience and employability skills in a real life setting.

Gatsby Benchmarks & Baker Clause
Trent View College measures progress against the Gatsby Benchmarks via the termly completion of the Compass+ evaluation and this information is shared with the Local Authority. The Gatsby Benchmarks were a recommendation from the Good Career Guidance report by John Holman and have been widely adopted nationally following the DfE’s Careers Strategy in 2017 which recommended all schools work towards the benchmarks. The benchmarks are:
- A stable careers programme
2. Learning from career and labour market information
3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
5. Encounters with employers and employees
6. Experience of workplaces
7. Encounters with further and higher education
8. Personal guidance
Trent View College is fully compliant with the Baker Clause and all students from Year 12 onwards have at least one employer/workplace encounter and one further education encounter each year. Trent View College continues to work with local education providers and employers to ensure that work experience and encounters are appropriate and meaningful.
